A Naturally Vegan Guide to Rome
Four days of eating, drinking and exploring in the Eternal City
For my birthday last week, I spent four days in my favourite city, basking in the sun that had been so reluctant to show its face in the UK this year — until now, finally! It was my first time back in Rome since switching to a plant-based diet, and I wasn’t exactly sure how that would go down in Lazio, a region proudly boasting dairy- and meat-heavy classics like Carbonara, Amatriciana and Cacio e Pepe. But if the last few years have taught me anything, it’s this: most cuisines, even those seemingly built on prosciutto and parmigiano, have plant-based gems in their repertoire, if you know where to look.
So here’s what I drank and ate over the four days. Not everything made the cut because not everything is worth sharing. But everything listed here is traditionally vegan, meaning you can immerse yourself in the local life, even on a plant-based diet. Plus, I’m also highlighting a few of my favourite sights I’ve discovered — the ones that don’t involve getting trampled at the Colosseum or dodging selfie sticks at the Trevi Fountain. Let’s dive in.
